BUILD WITH THE BEST!
Berd spokes are made from an advanced polymer called ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). UHMWPE has 12 times the strength-to-weight ratio of steel and floats on water. It also has a significantly improved fatigue life and is impervious to the elements. This is what makes Berd spokes the lightest, strongest, and most durable spoke ever invented.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What types of hubs do Berd spokes work with?
Berd spokes may be used on most J-Hook and many StraightPull Hubs.
What types of rims do Berd spokes work with?
Berd Spokes may be used with either alloy or carbon rims.
Can I purchase Berd spokes from my local bicycle shop?
Berd Spokes should be installed by a professional wheel builder. Please check our list of approved shops.
Can I race with Berd Spokes?
Yes. Berd Spokes have been UCI approved.
What color options are available.
Currently Berd Spokes come in White only. But future colors are being developed.
How much weight will I save over metal spokes?
Typically between 100g and 200g weight will be saved over steel spokes.
Are Berd spokes the same length as metal spokes for any given wheel?
No. Berd Spokes are slightly different to account for the hub connection and the material stretch during building.
Berd Spokes are flexible, so how can you make a wheel out of them?
Berd Spokes hold tension with minimal deformation. The same as a steel spoke. It is the pre-tension in building that supports a wheel.
Does my hub need to be modified to work with Berd spokes?
J-Hook hubs may require spoke hole chamfer. Straightpull hubs may require a special bushing (sold separately).
How do Berd spokes connect to the hub?
The eye of the spoke is secure with a special, small rod.
How do Berd spokes connect to the rim?
A normal steel threaded shank attaches the rim end. Just like any other spoke.
What type of nipple should I use with Berd spokes?
We recommend using 'double square' or DSN style nipples. However, any normal spoke nipple may be used.
How do you prevent Berd spokes from twisting while truing?
The steel shank has a small flat which can be held with a Berd Spoke Tool.
