Astuto Berd Edition ADB 36mm Discbrake Wheelset
The latest Astuto / Berd wheelset offers a new level in wheel performance and low weight. Our 36mm CFD designed rimset is perfectly matched to a special DT Swiss / Berd Polylite assembly. This yields the best overall performance possible in a tension spoked wheel with very low overall weight. Rim profile is highly aerodynamic and designed around 25C - 28C competition tubeless tires. Though you may run larger tire easily thanks to the ample inner dimension of the rim.
The Berd / DT System offers unheard of shock dampening and broader tension range than either steel or solid carbon spokes. This allows us to create a wheel that is very stiff and at the same time soak up road vibrations, reduce 'chatter' and stick like glue under any riding conditions.
Each wheelset is meticulously hand assembled by master wheelbuilder and tuned to each customer's individual preferences. Customizing of rim finish is also possible on this wheelset. (extra fee).

Features: Almost too many to list here. But we basically started from scratch is designing this wheelset by utilizing both our many years experience in racing and construction along with modern CFD approach to determine and verify best structural and aerodynamic shapes.
The whole wheelset is designed together as a system so that all parts work together to make the best performance possible. Each component we've selected is the best in breed and then based on matched sets, we hand assemble every wheel to ensure quality and consistency.
Let's start with the rim shape -
1) Slightly asymmetric - achieving balanced spoke tension is very important to the overall performance of the wheel. Each tension member should be the same (optimally) but due to the offset of both freebody and disc - this is difficult to do with a symmetric rim. The only option is to adjust the spoke count so that you have fewer spokes on the higher angle side than the pulling (or braking) side. That raises other issues - so, while it's a solution that is popular - it's not really the best. By carefully choosing a small asymmetry we can increase the bracing angle on the driving side and reduce it on the non-driving side. That helps without having to reduce spoke count. But the asymmetry also affects wheel aerodynamics, so we need to be really careful about the shape and amount of this adjustment.
2) High Volume - tires have become larger and lighter. This is great! It means the tire volume can be increased resulting in higher compliance without losing agility. Result is better riding, actually faster wheels with higher grip. Our rims are constructed toallow for the higher volume tires with a spacious 21mm inside width.
3) TLR OK! Tubeless is growing in popularity and adoption. So these rims were designed with Tubeless Easy as the primary fitting. We still incorporate a small 'hook' so that you <can> run legacy tires without safety worry. But the preference will be for tubeless.
Then the hubs -
The competition standard across almost every class and genre of racing is the DT Swiss 240sp. It's easy to maintain, reasonably light, excellent drive system and super reliable. We've chosen the DT240sp as our primary hub for these wheels. And we offer other hub selections if you prefer! But for most applications, the DT240sp will be the answer - so this is what we spec'd for.
About Berd -
The Berd Polylite system is a new approach on using aerospace fabric tension elements. Sure, we've seen these in the past - Tioga comes to mind (I still have a set). Berd has totally re-engineered the filament tension unit so that it can be applied to almost any hub / rim system with little or no modification. The tension / elasticity specifications make it perfect for use in a wheelset where we want high tension and still offer some elasticity to reduce de-loading issues. The material also absorbs energy rapidly and without 'return', making it ideal for absorbing higher frequency road vibrations resulting ins a very smooth, stable ride.
Assembly -
Every wheelset is hand assembled in a very meticulous way. Led by a master wheelbuilder with over 30yrs experience. Our wheel benches use state of the art P&K LIe truing stands with measuring accuracy in the 10ths of thousands of mm. Combined with digital, calibrated tensionometers we can carefully assmemble, tension and true the wheelset to a very high tolerance. The Berd System wheelsets are trued to within +/- .1mm and tension variations between spokes are held to within +/- 1% or lower.
After assembly - we mount a test tire, pressurize and check for any deformation or leaks. The wheelset is left to 'rest' for a period of 24hrs, then QC checked and final truing before packing. It's a known fact that wheels deform slightly under tire pressure - and we can adjust for that so that your wheelset will run perfectly round and true WITH tires. Because that's how you ride them!
Guarantee -
Every wheelset is fully guaranteed against mfg defect for 5yrs. So, any delaminations, deformation or issues in hubs and spokes that are mfg related - we cover it. This doesn't include crash damage or general wear and tear like bearings, freebody scarring, finish, etc. But we want to ensure you have a long lasting, highly durable wheel with no hassles. We also offer a special Crash Damage replacement program so that f you do prang your wheels - replacing will be straight forward and less costly.
